The four Sephardic Synagogues.

The history of these synagogues.

Yochanan Ben Zakai Synagogue.

Yochanan ben Zakai synagogue was established at the beginning of the seventeenth century, and in 1947 it became this synagogue of the Sephardic sect in Jerusalem.

In the seventeenth century a plot of land was chosen below the street level in order to hide this building from the authorities and it is said that this synagogue was at street level but the houses that were around it collapsed, and this synagogue remained recently built around it many high buildings so this church appeared to be under the street.

After that this synagogue was officially permitted, but it was necessary to set the rules at that time, which were to be lower than the Islamic buildings and this temple is now located In the Jewish Quarter.

It was completely renovated after the Six-Day War, and this happened by one of the Jewish clerics. This Jewish synagogue is distinguished from other temples by its old and beautiful construction because it contains some wonderful beautiful decorations that you will not see anywhere and this Synagogue is one of the most famous sites in Jerusalem.

Istanbuli Synagogue.

When the Jewish community expanded in Jerusalem and after that a large number of immigrants arrived from Istanbul from Turkey and therefore, they used one of the buildings as a Jewish synagogue and then they established this synagogue.

This Jewish synagogue attracted eastern communities, including Kurdistan, North and West Africa. This synagogue contains a structure dating back to the seventeenth century which brought from a Jewish Synagogue in Italy.

This structure was restored in the eighteenth century, and after that this structure was brought into Jerusalem in 1836.

During the war between the Arabs and Israel in the year 1948, the Arabs entered this synagogue, but after Israel took control of the city of Jerusalem after the War of the Days the Sixth this Jewish Synagogue has been renovated.

The Istanbul Synagogue is a very large synagogue and it is used by the Spanish and Portuguese worshipers who follow the curvature of London. This synagogue has a special beauty as well as it has water tank, a store for old books, as well as an entrance on the eastern facade.

Eliahu Ha’ navi Synagogue.

This synagogue was established in 1586 and is named after the name of Elijah the Prophet, and this Jewish synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the four synagogues, and this Jewish synagogue is like a house for the study of the Torah, and this synagogue was used only for prayers on Religious occasions.

Emtsai Synagogue.

It is also called the Middle Jewish synagogue, and this Jewish synagogue was a central room for the Jewish complex and it was originally ia part of women. It was used as a women’s section in the Church of Rabban Youhanna bin Zaki and during the Throne Day it was converted into a road for worshipers.

In the eighteenth century the courtyard was covered and then turned into what It is now known as the Middle Jewish synagogue because it is located in the center and this is the same as these four synagogues have a great holiness within the Jewish community.
