Historical Background
St. George (Mar Girgis) was a Palestinian conscript in the Roman army in the 3rd century AD. He became famous for his faith. He was martyred in 303 AD for refusing to renounce Christianity under Emperor Diocletian’s persecution. There has been a church dedicated to him in Coptic Cairo since the 10th century. The current building was completed in 1909 and there are also alot of another churches in cairo such as Church of St Sergius & Bacchus which is the oldest church in coptic cairo and Church of St Simeon the Tanner which located in moqattam hills in cairo
Monastery and Festivals
Next to the church is a Greek Orthodox monastery, but it’s closed to visitors. The Coptic moulid (saints’ festival) of Mar Girgis is celebrated here on 23 April. Pilgrims and worshippers come to commemorate St. George’s life and martyrdom and Hanging Church which is in cairo also and St Joseph's Church which built in 1909
