Shagaret Al Durr was never buried in this mausoleum. After her husband Sultan Ayyub died she became sultana but her reign only lasted 80 days. She was murdered – one story has it she was slapped to death with hammam slippers – and her body was thrown off the Citadel walls to be eaten by the dogs of Cairo.
