God Bes: Guardian of Childbirth and Home
Bes is the only god in ancient Egyptian mythology to be shown in profile. Though a minor god, he was a big deal in the minds of the ancient Egyptians.
With his demonic looks, Bes isn’t exactly the most obvious family god. But he was the protector of the home and children, especially during childbirth. This is one of his earliest roles. Bes’ protective nature extended to protecting against wild animals, making him even more important in domestic life. His image was on all sorts of household items, from headrests to personal care objects.
Ancient Egyptian Dwarf God
Bes was connected to dance and music, which he used to calm down angry goddesses. His links to the solar cycle also tie him to the solar god.
An ancient Egyptian fairy god, Bes was a mixed being with divine and demonic qualities. He was a war god and a guardian of childbirth and home, with themes of desire, entertainment, music and dancing. Originally a god of the pharaoh, Bes became popular among the common people because he protected women and children. He had no temples or priests but was one of the most well known gods in ancient Egypt, on household items.
