This congested area of park, markets and transportation hub is the transition from European Cairo, particularly the theatre and entertainment district, to medieval Cairo of Saladin, the Mamluks and the Ottomans. You’ll probably end up here because it’s a short walk to Islamic Cairo and there are another landmarks in cairo such as Midan Talaat Harb which is at the south of the square of talaat harab and Midan Al Hussein which still a hub of cultrual and social activity especially during ramdan nights 

On the southwest side of Midan Ataba, past the flyovers, the domed main post office has a nice courtyard. The ‘Commemorative Stamp Office’ just inside the post office entrance is where you buy tickets to the adjacent Postal Museum. The weird and wonderful collection of miniature models of post offices, old postal uniforms, aerogram envelopes and stamps is worth a quick look if you like an odd museum and there are another museums in Cairo such as Cheops Boat Museum which is at the south of the Great Pyramids of Khufu and contains amazing exhibits and Museum of Modern Egyptians Art which is the beautiful gezira exhibition grounds opposite the cairo opera house 

Ezbekiyya is just off Midan Ataba. By night the stalls of the Ezbekiyya Book Market are bustling with browsers. By day Ezbekiyya Gardens is a dusty urban oasis. The famous Shepheard’s Hotel, where British colonists used to stay, was once opposite – it was destroyed by Black Saturday rioters in 1952.
