The two main streets of downtown, Talaat Harb and Qasr El Nil, meet at Midan Talaat Harb roundabout where cars zoom around a statue of tarboosh-sporting Mr. Harb, the founder of the national bank thera is also MidanTahrir in downtown
On the square is Groppi’s. In its prime this was the most famous patisserie this side of the Mediterranean. The gold mosaics around the entrance are the only remaining sparkle and the whole place was closed in 2016 for restoration due to water damage on the ceiling.
Just south of the square on Talaat Harb street is Café Riche, established in 1908. This was the hang-out of Egyptian writers and intellectuals. Nasser allegedly met with his collaborators here to plan the 1952 revolution.
