The west bank of Luxor has been a royal burial site since around 2100 BC. But it was during the New Kingdom period (1550–1069 BC) that pharaohs chose this isolated valley dominated by the pyramid shaped mountain peak of Al Qurn (The Horn) for their final rest. Once called the Great Necropolis of Millions of Years of Pharaoh or the Place of Truth the Valley of the Kings has 63 royal tombs and there are also another tombs in luxor you can visit such as Tomb of Seti I which knwon as the best tomb in the valley and Tuthmosis III ( KV 34) which deeps in the hils Tomb of Tuthmosis IV ( KV 43) which one of the largest and deepest of the 18th dynasty and Tomb of Tawosret sethnakht (KV 14) which was the wife of of seti II and Tomb of Nefertari which is the best in theban necropolis and all of egypt and also Tomb of Amenhotep II ( KV 35) which ruled egypt around 1400 BC and Tomb of Horemheb ( KV 57) where it is famous for its bas relief
These tombs have suffered greatly over the centuries from treasure hunters floods and more recently mass tourism. The carbon dioxide friction and humidity from visitors has damaged the reliefs and paintings. So the Department of Antiquities has installed dehumidifiers and glass screens in the most affected tombs. They have also introduced a rotation system so only a limited number of tombs are open to the public at any one time. A standard entry ticket allows you to visit 3 tombs, extra tickets are available for the tombs of Ay Tutankhamun Seti I and Ramses VI and there are also another landmarks in luxor such as Tomb of Ay which is famous for the scences of ay hunting hippopotamus and fishing in the marshes and Open Air Museum which is to the left north of the first court of the amun temple enclousure and Assasif Tombs which located near the temple of hatshepsut and Art from People to People which is behind the nile valley hotel in luxor
Visiting the Valley of the Kings is a gradual dry and hot climb. Visitors especially those on bicycles should be well prepared. The tourist bazaar at the entrance has soft drinks ice creams and snacks and souvenirs. The air-conditioned Valley of the Kings Visitors Centre & Ticket Booth has a model of the valley, a film about Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and toilets.
